Sculptor J. Mikens' birthplace “Skārdupītes”

“Skārdupītes”, sculptor J. Mikens’ birthplace, is a national monument of Latvian history located in Aknīste Parish, Jēkabpils Municipality.
This place was home to renowned Lithuanian artists – sculptor Juozas Mikenas, aviator and ceramicist Jonas Mikenas, and museum specialist Akvilė Mikenaitė.
To honor the Mikėnas family legacy, the site is being given a new framework. A local history center is being developed here to bring together regional researchers, encourage collaboration, and strengthen the prestige of the field.
There is still much work to be done, so visible results will take time, but efforts to improve the area are actively underway.

The site now features a picnic area, two impressive wooden domes, and three resident Californian white rabbits: Suzy, Titi, and Ralfins.

Additionally, the territory is part of the Latvian border tourism route 1836, marked by special road posts. Thanks to the enthusiasm of Latvian travelers and supporters – Ingrīda Branska, Ilze Bula, Lauma Edule, Iveta Velme, and Jānis Gailītis – since August 25, 2020, the 1836 road post has greeted passersby at “Skārdupītes”.

“Skārdupītes” is also part of the Sēlija Trail segment, and nearby flows the Susēja River, offering beautiful canoeing routes.
