Memorial Site “Battle of Jēkabpils”
The Battle of Jēkabpils was one of the major battles of the Great Northern War. On 26 July 1704, the Swedish army, led by the Governor of Courland, Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt, defeated a much larger Russian and allied Lithuanian force, preventing an invasion of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, which had been under Swedish control since 1700. A memorial stone has been erected at the site of the battle, near present-day Sala in Sala Parish.
