KRUSTPILS TRAIL

Long-distance hiking route in Jēkabpils county on the right bank of the Daugava or Krustpils side. Total length of the Krustpils trail: 122km. The hiking route is divided into five sections and connected to public transport hubs, making it easily accessible to hiking enthusiasts.

1.section Krustpils castle – railway station "Trepe"  26 km

The path from Krustpils Castle to Asote Hillfort will take walkers along the right bank of the Daugava, observing the city also across the Daugava river, where the banks of the Daugava and the mighty domes of the Jēkabpils St. Spirit Orthodox Church are visible. Further, after exploring the ancient Asote Hillfort, the route will lead towards Laukezers lake, which is one of the cleanest lakes in Latvia. All the way to the village of Vīpe, walkers will walk along a gravel road surrounded by various lakes of Krustpils parish. In the final stage, interested parties are invited to visit the craft center “Māzers” in the village of Vīpe, rest their feet and get to know the world of applied arts – at exhibitions of ceramics, weaving or other crafts.

2.section Railway station "Trepe" – Railway station "Kūkas" 25 km

This section of the Krustpils trail is characterized by typical Latvian rural landscapes - green fields, cultivated land. In turn, the forest will delight with its diversity of plants and walkers will have the opportunity to stretch their legs by climbing over some fallen branches on the way. The route leads along gravel and forest road surfaces, winding past houses in Krustpils parish, where there is a chance to meet alpacas. Not far away, in the territory of the guest house "Celmiņi", there is an opportunity to have a packed meal in a well-equipped picnic area, spend the night in a camping cabin or relax in a sauna. From Plošlejas to the end of the section, it is an easy walk along wide gravel roads. 

3. section Railway station "Kūkas" – Unguru lutheran church 30 km

The trail section begins at the "Kūkas" railway station in Krustpils parish. Walking along the gravel road, hikers will pass the "Spilves" holiday home on their way, where the owners not only offer accommodation and relaxing massages, but also the opportunity to learn about grape growing and the story of winemaking. This section of the trail is special in that the route leads along two nature reserves: "Silabebru Lake" and "Timsmale Lake". At the specially designed recreation areas of Lake Timsmale, hikers can stop and appreciate one of the most outstanding fresh water lakes in Latvia. The trail takes hikers to the destination along a winding road all the way to the Unguru lutheran church.

4. section Unguru lutheran church - Leināni  23 km

The hiking section begins at the ancient Unguru lutheran church in Medņi. The route will then lead along a gravel road through Antūži to the bank of the Aiviekste River. Walking along the river bank, you can take a break at the Vēži HES. The path will then continue along an asphalt road. In this section of the Krustpils trail, there is a chance to meet a forest animal, and not only, because when passing the farm of the “Mīļdzīvnieku biedrība” (Animal Society), walkers can be greeted by the horses living there. The final kilometers of the section to the “Leināni” stop, which is located on the side of the Riga – Daugavpils highway, will lead along an asphalt road.

5.section Leināni – Krustpils castle (Jēkabpils)  18 km

At the beginning of the  section, an easy walk along the asphalt surface along the horse farm of the “Mīļdzīvnieku biedrība” (Animal Society). Further, turning onto a smaller country road, after a short walk, you will have to cross the narrow river Babraunīca. Taking the forest path in the direction of Ozolsala, the pine forest planted by Baron Korf of Krustpils Castle will majestically stretch along the way. These are the oldest plantations of the last century in Latvia, in which pine trees line up in straight lines. Upon reaching the village of Spuņģēni, those interested have the opportunity to stop by a ceramics studio and shop at a local store before continuing their journey through Priži to Jēkabpils.
