Description
The construction of the embankment was commenced in 1981 after the great floods. In 2011 the embankment was renovated and improved. Now, walking along the pedestrian promenade, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the calm flow of the river Daugava.
In January 2023, Jēkabpils experienced one of the all-time worst floods in its history. The water level reached 8.92 m above the zero mark of the observation station. The extremely high water level in the Daugava and ice build-up caused damage to the dam, threatening to rupture it and flood the left bank of the city. Hundreds of residents of Jēkabpils worked for several days and nights to reinforce the dam.
In recognition of the tremendous work and unity shown by the residents of Jēkabpils, the Latvijas lepnums 2023 award in the nomination "One for All, All for One" was awarded to the residents of Jēkabpils.
